Creating a Health and Wellness Community

Piece by piece, through word of mouth, our health and wellness community has been growing.

Welcome to Our Health and Wellness Community, and the #couchkills100

We’re not that far away from our 1 year anniversary when the #couchkills health and wellness community was just an idea. So today I decided to take a look at the ground we’ve taken, and all of the ground that’s still out there to inspire, educate and support people to get up #offthecouch and live life well!

On Wednesday, August 13, 2014 inspired by a project I created taking a course at Landmark, I shared a video that launched a Facebook page called #couchkills with the intention to create a #GlobalMovement to inspire people to get up #offtheircouch and start to move more, eat better, and through their example inspire others to join them.

And little by little, through word of mouth, our health and wellness community has been growing. And it started to grow even more once we put another stake in the ground and launched the #couchkills web site in November of 2014.

But the truth be told, we’ve barely scratched the surface in creating an online community that has shifted what’s truly possible to create health and wellness for the planet. Now that may sound grandiose or impossible but that’s the big game I’ve committed for my life to going forward.

So here is another stake I’m putting in the ground and out in the world today, Thursday, June 11, 2015.

From this day forward I’m personally going to be active and engaged everyday in making massive progress to inspire, enroll and register people from all over the world to subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed and participate in living life well. And I’m excited to enroll and register people who want to take on being #couchkills health and wellness ambassadors in their communities!

That was my intention this morning before I stepped into my gym at Planet Fitness, as I was about to run Day 40 of my 365 Day #RWRUNSTREAK

So there I am on the treadmill having declared I was running 4.5 miles, as there are only 142 days till I’m running my 2nd NYC Marathon. I think I was about 2 miles into my run when Pink’s song F**kin Perfect comes on, while I’m in one of those sweet spots where your body and mind are open to breakthrough a barrier in performance.

In that instant, Pink’s lyrics really spoke to me as I saw myself as being both powerful and vulnerable. Powerful in that I have made such an amazing personal transformation in my own health and wellness, and also knowing the access to that reality was in my willingness to be open and vulnerable to exploring my past limiting self-talk, and leaving it in my past. And at the same time realizing that there are so many people who are challenged with their weight, their self image and their health and wellness, not so much by what they eat or how they move or exercise, but in how they think, what they believe, and what they keep buried deep inside in secret.

I’ve had the privilege to have coached many people, and really understand the saying “what’s most secret, is most common.” Yes, to lose weight and get healthy you need to move, exercise and eat better. But time and time again I’ve seen first hand for myself that the people closest to me, and hundreds of others, can’t start making changes until they manage their self talk and let go off the “weight of their past”.

And even though I coach people to live their life with a yoga mentality, that “life is about practice, not perfection”, I do think Pink’s lyrics capture the spirit of what we all need to get, and more importantly, remember:

You’re so mean (so mean) when you talk (when you talk)
About yourself. You were wrong.
Change the voices (change the voices) in your head (in your head)
Make them like you instead.

“F**kin’ Perfect”

Made a wrong turn once or twice
Dug my way out, blood and fire
Bad decisions, that’s alright
Welcome to my silly life

Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood
Miss ‘No way, it’s all good’
It didn’t slow me down.
Mistaken, always second guessing
Underestimated, look I’m still around

Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel
Like you’re less than f**king perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you’re nothing, you’re f**king perfect to me

You’re so mean (so mean) when you talk (when you talk)
About yourself. You were wrong.
Change the voices (change the voices) in your head (in your head)
Make them like you instead.

So complicated,
Look how we all make it.
Filled with so much hatred
Such a tired game
It’s enough, I’ve done all I could think of
Chased down all my demons
I’ve seen you do the same
(Oh oh)

Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel
Like you’re less than f**king perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you’re nothing, you’re fucking perfect to me

The whole world’s scared, so I swallow the fear
The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer
So cool in lying and we try, try, try but we try too hard
And it’s a waste of my time.
Done looking for the critics, cause they’re everywhere
They don’t like my jeans, they don’t get my hair
Exchange ourselves and we do it all the time
Why do we do that, why do I do that (why do I do that)?

(Yeah! Oh!)
Oh, pretty, pretty, pretty

Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel
Like you’re less than f**king perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you’re nothing, you’re f**king perfect to me
(You’re perfect, you’re perfect)
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you’re nothing, you’re f**king perfect to me.

So by now you’re probably wondering what all this has to do with my opening… Welcome to #couchkills100

I have many ideas in the works to help expand this #GlobalMoving and I think this one is so simple and fun, that I have a feeling it’s going to be a powerful catalyst to really get the ball rolling.

You may have noticed that ever since the beginning of the year, I’ve been sharing my daily posts about my #RWRUNSTREAK and it’s always nice to get support. But this morning I realized that I really want to invite others to join me in moving more, eating better, and inspiring others to do the same #couchkills style.

And for those of you who think they can’t because you’re out of shape, start with an easy enough goal that you can achieve so you’re willing to take on another goal. And please test drive different goals, maybe even stretch goals.

So here’s the game I’m creating for #couchkills100 and please know I’m very open for your thoughts on how you can see this idea going viral! Not for the sake of just going viral, but so it inspires more people to join in.

At this early stage the #couchkills100 is super simple…

1. Choose a goal that inspires you to do it a 100 times. It could be done in a 100 seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and I guess, even months. But I’d suggest you think about having fun creating and completing a boatload of mini goals, especially newbies to all of this.
2. You can bike, walk, hike, run, squat, push up, pull up, anything in 100 something increments.
3. And “declare + share” what you’re doing with the world using #couchkills

And there’s more…

Please make sure you subscribe to our #couchkills newsletter, so you’re the first to know when our web developers start releasing a fun suite of #couchkills tools, so you can track what you’re doing, share your goals to inspire others, and yes, win a bunch of FREE stuff too!

So for now all I have to say is “tag you’re it!”

Set a goal.

Get on it.
