Getting Started With Yoga
There are many types of yoga that can be practiced, and all of us come to it from a different place. The important thing in getting started with yoga is to find what is best for you. If you will incorporate yoga into something you already do then you will be more successful at continuing it, and possibly expanding the practice. Let’s start with some basics.
Breathe! If all you do is practice mindful breathing by slowly inhaling and exhaling, preferably through the nose, then you are practicing yoga. Start by inhaling for three seconds and exhaling for four seconds. As you are able, lengthen the inhale and exhale. This can be done in the car, at your desk, on the couch, or as you stroll through the park. One of my favorite things to do is close my eyes while I do this. It might be for a few breaths or a few minutes.
Balance! No, you don’t have to balance in some contorted pose to be successful with balancing in yoga. Making small steps in balancing can have a wonderful impact in your life. When you balance you engage your core and leg muscles. This strengthens them, and helps you to have more stability in your everyday life. Do you brush your teeth morning and night? If so, that is a fabulous time to incorporate balance into your routine. As you are brushing slightly lift one leg off the floor, or even lift the foot so it is balancing on the toes. Switch legs part way through your brushing. If needed you may lightly hold onto a counter to help feel more stable as you practice and get stronger. This can also be done while watching your favorite television program, cooking, washing dishes, etc.
Practicing yoga can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. This is a great way of getting started with yoga, and making it fit into your already busy schedule. Are you ready for more? If so, let’s talk.
