How To Live The Life You Want
Nelson Mandela said, “There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
Visualize the life you want! Close your eyes and picture the life that you want to live. Are you having a hard time visualizing what it is you want? If you are able to visualize it, does it seems like it is an impossible dream? It’s not!
In the past year I think the only thing I didn’t change is where I live. I even contemplated changing that, but am holding off for now. I love my life! Last year at this time is a different story. I was going day to day running around, but I wasn’t living the life I wanted to live and was a shell of who I am. Now people will often say to me that I am very lucky. Whatever you want to call it, lucky or blessed, I agree. However, I also worked hard to get the life I have as well as took some pretty big leaps.
Create a list! It sounds so cliché, but how can you work toward a life you want to live if you don’t know what makes up that life? For me there wasn’t a particular job that I wanted. However, there were components to my professional life that were important to me. For example a flexible work schedule, creative project outlets, and compensation based upon my performance were three items on my list. In my personal life I wanted to be able to take on more yoga students, see new places, and have peace in my home. I wanted to live healthier with principled eating, daily movement, meditate more, and sing zestfully (don’t worry I confine this to my home or car).
Stop giving excuses and create solutions! In the book, The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch said, “The brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough.” You can come up with an infinite list of why something won’t or can’t work. You only have to find one way to make it work, and there is usually more than one way to make that happen.
Police yourself and choose your hard! Don’t sneak a treat like someone is going to catch you. If you want a treat then eat it consciously, slowly, and fully enjoy it. Choose to do something because you want to do it. Take pride in the work that you do professionally and personally, and don’t cut corners just because someone didn’t see you cut them. Living the life you live is hard and changing your life is hard, but you have the power to choose your hard. Choose to live a better life in whatever form that is for you.
You can live the life you want to live. Visualize it, create a list, stop giving excuses, create solutions, police yourself, and choose your hard. You know how to live the life you want, so decide that you are worthy to live the life you want, and then make it happen in a timeframe that works for you. As Audrey Hepburn said, “Nothing is impossible, the word in and of itself says I’m possible.”
